Privacy
The short version. Your library never leaves your Mac and we can’t see it. The few things that do leave (your licence key, purchase details, update checks, and crash reports only if you turn them on) are listed below.
Memup is a private memory for your computer. It is built so that what you add to it stays on your device. This policy explains the few things that do leave your device, when, and why.
Who we are. Memup is made by [LEGAL NAME AND ADDRESS]. Contact: [PRIVACY EMAIL]. If you are in the European Economic Area or the UK, we are the data controller for the information described here.
What stays on your device
Everything you add to Memup stays on your device: files, screenshots, recordings, voice notes, the text Memup reads from them, and your searches. The library is encrypted on your device with a key kept in your system's keychain. All AI features (search by meaning, answers from your files, speech recognition) run on your device. Nothing from your library is sent to us or to any AI company, and we cannot see it.
What leaves your device, and when
Licence key (copies downloaded from our website only). There are no accounts and no sign-in. When you enter your licence key, Memup sends our licence service:
- the key;
- a salted hash of a random identifier created on your device;
- the device kind (for example "mac");
- the app version.
The service keeps, for each key, the devices it is active on and when each was last checked. Memup checks your licence about once a week and sends the same information each time. We use it only to provide your licence (to perform our contract with you). The Mac App Store version doesn't use our licence service at all.
Purchases.
- On our website: Paddle (our merchant of record) processes the purchase and handles payment details under its own privacy policy. We receive your email, what you bought, and the order reference. We use the email to send your licence keys, and to send them again if you ask ("Email me my keys").
- In the Mac App Store: Apple processes the purchase. We receive nothing about you.
Model downloads. The AI models are downloaded from Hugging Face when you choose a feature that needs one. Hugging Face sees your IP address and the file requested, as any website would. Nothing else is sent.
Updates (copies downloaded from our website only). Once a day, unless you turn it off in Settings, Memup fetches a small file from our downloads site to see whether there's a new version. The site sees your IP address and app version. The Mac App Store version is updated by Apple instead.
Crash reports (only if you turn them on). Crash reports are off unless you turn them on (Welcome or Settings › Privacy). A report says where in Memup's own code a problem happened, the app version and the processor type. Before anything is sent, Memup removes file names, paths, text from your library, email addresses, numbers and identifiers. Settings › Privacy shows exactly what was sent. Reports go to Sentry, in its EU (Frankfurt) region, which is told not to keep your IP address. They are kept for [SENTRY RETENTION PERIOD].
We don't use analytics, advertising or tracking of any kind. We don't sell or share personal information.
How long we keep it
- The email you bought with: until you ask us to forget it (below).
- Keys and the devices they are active on: for as long as the licence exists.
- "Email me my keys" and "Forget my email" requests: about a day, to limit how many emails are sent.
- Purchase records: kept as tax law requires [PERIOD, FOR EXAMPLE 7 YEARS IN NEW ZEALAND], without your email once you ask us to forget it.
Your choices and rights
- Forget your email at any time on our "Forget my email" page (account.memup.app/forget), after confirming from that email. Your keys keep working, but we can no longer send them to you again. There is no account to delete.
- Your library is yours. Export it at any time (File › Export Library), or delete it by deleting the app's data.
- You can ask us for a copy of what we hold about you, ask us to correct it, or object to how we use it, by writing to [PRIVACY EMAIL]. You can also complain to your data protection authority.
Children. Memup is not directed at children under 13 [OR THE AGE YOUR APP STORE AGE RATING AND LOCAL LAW REQUIRE].
Changes. If this policy changes, we update the date above, and we explain significant changes on our website and in the app's release notes.
